Filmmaker Hosts Conversations at Gotham Week Conference

Director is hosting four conversations next week at Gotham’s Gotham Week Conference, all with filmmakers who have recent movies we love and have covered extensively at Director. And these lectures are free to the public. Three are in person at Brooklyn Navy Yards, and the fourth is on Zoom. RSVP by clicking the links below.

Monday at 10:30 a.m. I’ll speak with DEDZA founder Kate Gondwe, one of our 25 New Faces last year, about the cast of Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman. Neptune Frostand in particular on the specialized techniques used to expand the reach of this groundbreaking work of Afrofuturism.

Tuesday from noon to 1:00 p.m., I will wear my producer hat in conversation with my colleague Alexandra Byer, producer of great films like Funny head, The mountains are a dream calling me and From Lo Mio, and co-founder of the production company RATHAUS. We will speak candidly about the state of independent production today and the challenges facing independent producers.

On Wednesday, September 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., I’ll be talking to another 25 New Face, Ricky D’Ambrose, about making his movie Cathedral, a critical success that was achieved within the Venice Biennale’s ultra-slim university cinema budget restrictions. We’ll talk about what he learned from making an ensemble period drama on a truly independent scale, among other topics.

Finally, on Wednesday September 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Vadim Rizov will meet with two other 25 New Faces — Daniel Hymanson, director of So late, so soon; and Isidore Bethel, director (acts of love) and editor (he’s working on Hymanson’s new documentary) — on the art of documentary editing. This one will be on Zoom.

Again, these are free, so hit the links above, and I hope to see some of you there.
