What’s New in Ultra This Weekend – May 7

We took a small step this first week of May with the 30th consecutive year What’s new in Ultra. This coincides nicely with our UltraRunning schedule which features 42 different races across the United States this weekend.

Kicking off with a distance that is a bit of an anomaly in the sport of ultrarunning, but with a race that has lasted more than four decades, is the 44th Strolling Jim™ 40 Mile in Wartrace, Tennessee, on Saturday, May 7 at 7:00 a.m. 2021 UltraRunner #5 Harvey Lewis III of Cincinnati, Ohio is on the start list, along with Dink Taylor of Huntsville, Alabama, who has competed in an astonishing 35 editions of the race . David Jones of Murfreesboro, Tennessee is also expected to start and has completed 33 Strolling Jim races. On the women’s side, look for Jenna Henry of Webb City, Missouri, to make a strong debut, third place in the 2021 race, Kat Coffey of Petersburg, Tennessee, for the win and Cathy Downes of Evansville, Indiana, who has two top-ten finishes included in his previous five placings at Strolling Jim to also lead the charge. The race director is our own UR contributor Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell from the infamous Barkley Marathons, which I covered in the May/June issue that just came out this week.

We’re taking a quick cross-country ride to the edge of content and the 25th Miwok 100k in Stinson Beach, Calif., on Saturday. With the pristine trails of Mount Tamalpais, Marin Headlands, views of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, and offering nearly 12,000 feet of elevation gain, this is a serious 62 mile .

The front of the peloton should also be competitive this year. Your 2022 FOURmidable 50k winner Madison Hart of Boulder, Colorado, UR columnist Sarah Lavender Smith of Telluride, Colorado, Krissy Moehl of Bellingham, Washington, and Bree Lambert-Sanders of San Jose, California will no doubt mix in the front of the domain. For the gentleman, Dylan Bowman of Portland, Oregon, 2019 Lake Sonoma champion Sebastien Spehler of Masevaux, France, and 2021 Lake Sonoma 100k runner-up Kristian Howell of Santa Barbara, Calif., will lead the charge. Another regular UR columnist and podcast guest, Dean Karnazes, is also scheduled to start at 5 a.m.

Additional events on our UltraRunning schedule include the McDonald Forest 50k in Corvallis, Oregon, the Collegiate Peaks Trail Run 50-miler in Buena Vista, Colorado, the Quad Rock 50-miler in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Big A 50k in York, Maine, and the 12 Hours of Mind the Ducks in Webster, New York on Saturday, May 7 as well.
